Grumbacher® Workable Fixative, Matte is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 19.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from low odor i have breathing problems and the product don't choke me.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Awful product. Michael's options limited... This stuff is terrible. It ruined my art works. It darkened a bright pastel, and made a charcoal drawing look like it had dirt on it. There are good fixatives by brands that Michael's carries. I don't know why Michael's doesn't stock them. Go online and find other options.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great I mainly use this to “fixative” sketches on papers from books.... works great, occasionally I will run my finger across the sketch after use ....to test smudging and the sketch never does.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Used for Gouache I use this to pre treat gouache paintings before I follow up with a clear water based polyurethane. Otherwise the brush strokes smear the gouache.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works very well Doesn’t take many coats to set in place. Also offers another layer to continue working without messing up what you've previously done.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Aggressive brand loyalty! 1pt from Gryffindor! I came in looking for my regular Kryolan® Workable Fixatif (but forgot which of the 7,496 stores I get my supplies at carried it), and was disappointed to find that Grumbacher® holds a monopoly on Michael's fine art sprays. The lack of options (for levels of quality/purposes - not every project needs to be archival) was pretty irritating. Were I still in art school, that $5 difference would've meant deciding between finishing an assignment or getting to eat dinner (so, you know, worth considering when working with your brand contracts). Not being given a choice is nearly /all/ of my beef with this product (God I hate that word. It just doesn't sit right on the tongue, y'know? /product/). That all being said, it did work exceptionally well, especially considering it was being tested against something it wasn't designed for - namely, priming the surface of a vinyl doll head for repainting, and holding several thin layers of chalk pastel and dried washes of watercolor (without making them brittle or flaky against the uncompromising flexibility of the doll's head). Tl;Dr: Good for archival fixing. Not good for cheaper projects. If you carries experimental/beginner/reasonable alternatives to this obnoxiously high-quality fixative, it would have been awarded slightly more fake internet points.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works perfect! Helps to seal the oil pastel and let's you add more if required to complete. Also gives a slight glossy look if one is required for your finish.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Smelly, but gets the job done This fixative is the first one I have ever tried, so I can't really compare it to other brands. However, it does serve its purpose and keeps artwork in place. I use this for my chalk pastel pieces in my drawing pad, and it helps keep everything in place. My main issue is the overwhelming smell. I recommend going outside and having the paper sit outside for a few minutes to air out. Be careful not to do it when there's lots of wind or the fixative will just fly in the wind...literally.
