You're new to the skills necessary to complete this project, or maybe you've tried them just once or twice before.
Step 1
- With fabric scissors, cut silk chiffon fabric into the sizes desired for your scarves.
NOTE: This fabric’s width is 45". Cut into thirds across its width, it will make three scarves, each approximately 12" x 44". You may choose to order more fabric, depending on the size of scarf you prefer (e.g., 2 yards of silk chiffon cut lengthwise should yield three scarves, each approximately 14" x 72").

- Loosely fold the silk accordion-style, as you would fold a paper fan. You might also twist or knot the fabric. Secure each piece of fabric with mini clothespins.
TIP: If you are using a heavier fabric, such as cotton, use a stronger method to secure it, such as large clothespins or rubber bands.
Step 2
- Once all three pieces are arranged and secured, prepare ice to be added to the half-gallon Mason jar. If possible, use small ice cubes (or crushed ice).

- Place one folded section of silk chiffon into the bottom of the Mason jar. Cover with a layer of ice so that the fabric is completely covered. If necessary, use a craft stick (or plastic utensil) to arrange the ice.
TIP: Keep your layer of ice to 2" high or less,  to make sure there will be room for two more layers inside the jar.

- Put on the gloves included in the dye kit and open the bottle that contains powdered turquoise dye. Carefully sprinkle the turquoise dye over the ice, covering as much of it as possible. Use all of the powdered dye, emptying the bottle completely.
Step 3
- Place your second piece of silk chiffon directly on top of the powdered dye, then add another layer of ice. Open the bottle with powdered green dye and sprinkle all of the powder onto this second layer of ice.

- Place the final piece of silk chiffon on top of the green dye, then a final layer of ice, then sprinkle over it the final bottle of powdered dye, which is blue.

- As the ice melts, the dye will come into contact with the fabric, creating colored patterns. Leave the Mason jar for a minimum of 6-8 hours, and no longer than 12, before emptying it.
Step 4
- Drain the dye and remove the silk chiffon pieces. Remove all clothespins and rinse the fabric in cool water until the water runs clear.
TIP: Stainless sinks are best for rinsing out dye, since they will not absorb color. Avoid rinsing your fabric in light-colored or enameled sinks.

- Put the chiffon pieces into a plastic tub or stainless steel sink with stopper and fill with a few inches of cool water. Add 2-4 drops of dishwashing liquid and swish for a few minutes, then rinse in more cool water. Remove each of the fabric pieces from the water and gently squeeze out as much water as possible.
Step 5
- Place an old towel or several layers of paper towels on your ironing board to protect it from any residual dye or moisture. Heat your iron to low-medium heat, and make sure the steam function is off. You want to use dry heat.

- Lay a piece of silk chiffon on the ironing board, smoothing it to remove any wrinkles. Cover the damp fabric in a layer or two or paper towels. Gently press the scarf,  section by section, to dry it. Repeat for the remaining two pieces of fabric.

- Once the scarves are dry, remove the top layers of paper towels and press each scarf once more to remove any wrinkles or creases.
Step 6
- Examine the sides of each scarf and trim with fabric scissors, if necessary to make them straight. Create a fringe along one edge by using your fingers to pick out the outermost thread and pull it away from the fabric completely.

- Continue to pull threads until your fringe is ½" to ¾" long. Repeat for each of the four sides of the scarf. Hand wash in cool water and press gently with an iron on low-medium heat to dry.
