kids pirate halloween costume

Step 1
- Download the michaels.com templates on this page for diagrams of the
pirate’s shirt vest and sash, as well as a pattern for the buckle.

- ADULT: Press the white T-shirt to remove any wrinkles and lay it on a flat working surface.

- With scissors, cut a ragged neckline, sleeves and bottom hem on the shirt. Follow the diagram as a guide.
Step 2
- As on the diagram, cut a 3" slash down the center front of the shirt’s neckline. Use the bead reamer to poke four holes down each side of this slash.

- ADULT: Thread your tapestry needle with 12" of narrow red satin ribbon and weave it in a criss-cross pattern through the holes in the front of the shirt to create the lacing. Refer to the diagram as a guide, if necessary. Do not tie the lacing in a bow, but trim the ends if necessary.

- Vest: Press the black T-shirt to remove any wrinkles and lay it on a flat working surface.
Step 3
- Use scissors to cut in a straight line across the black T-shirt, just underneath the armpits, then discard the top section of the shirt. Use the vest diagram as a guide.

- Cut vertically along one side of the remaining section of the shirt, so that it becomes a rectangle of fabric folded in half, instead of a tube.

- Measure across your pirate’s back at the shoulders, from arm to arm. Divide this number in half, and measure that same distance from the folded edge of the shirt fabric towards the opposite side. Mark this distance at the bottom hem of the shirt.
Step 4
- Measure 6" down from the mark you just made at the bottom hem of the shirt, and make a second mark here. This will be the top of the armhole.

- Mark a 6" vertical line down from the top of the armhole. Cut along this line, through both layers of fabric, to make both armholes at the same time. Use the vest diagram as a guide.

- Open up the fabric, and your pirate can don his or her vest. The bottom hem of the shirt becomes the top of the vest. Your pirate should put his or her arms through the armholes, and let the remainder of the shirt fabric drape down in front.
Step 5
- Sash: Use scissors to cut in a straight line across the red T-shirt, approximately 8” above the bottom hem. Discard the top section of the shirt. Use the sash diagram as a guide.

- Trim off the hem at the bottom of the T-shirt and discard. You will be left with a wide tube of fabric.

- Cut vertically along one side of the tube, so that it is a folded rectangle with open ends instead of a tube.
Step 6
- Cut both ends of the fabric into three strips, using the cut lines on the sash diagram as a guide.

- Pull on the strips to lengthen them. Wrap the sash over your pirate’s hips, and tie each set of fringed ends together at the side. The sash should go over the white shirt and the black vest.

- Belt: Cut one 36" length Mud Puddle Duck Tape®, and lay it sticky-side up on your working surface.
Step 7
- Cut a second piece of Mud Puddle tape in the same length. Hold this piece sticky side down, line it up with the first piece and slowly lower it onto the first so that the two pieces are adhered together as evenly as possible. Smooth along the belt to remove wrinkles, and trim away any exposed adhesive on the sides. Finally, trim the ends so that they are even.

- Wrap the belt over one of your pirate’s shoulders and under the other so that the ends hang to one side of his or her waist. Cut a small piece of Mud Puddle tape and wrap it around both ends to secure them together.

- Print and cut out the buckle template, trace it onto the back of the sheet of Silver glitter adhesive foam, and cut out the shape. Remove the adhesive backing and stick the buckle onto the belt at mid-chest level.
Step 8
- Cuffs: Measure your pirate’s wrist, and subtract 1". On red felt, measure and cut out a rectangle that is as long as this measurement and 3½" wide. Repeat for the second cuff.

- ADULT: Use the bead reamer to poke a row of five evenly spaced holes along both 3½" ends of a cuff. Repeat for the second cuff.

- ADULT: Thread a tapestry needle with a 12" piece of the narrow red satin ribbon. Weave it in a criss-cross pattern through the holes on both sides of the cuff to create the lacing.
Step 9
- Place the cuff on your pirate’s wrist and adjust the lacing so there is about 1" of skin between the cuff’s edges. Tie the ends of the ribbon in a bow and trim the ends if necessary. Repeat these steps to finish the second cuff.

- Wig and headscarf: Twine the ends of two brown chenille stems together to make one very long stem. Wrap this stem around your pirate’s head to make sure it is the correct size, then twine the excess ends of the stem together to close the circle. This circlet is the base of the wig.

- Begin cutting strands of brown yarn, all approximately 36" long. You will need between 150 and 200 strands to complete the wig.
TIP: One of the quickest ways to cut a large number of strands at one time is to bend your elbow up and wrap the yarn several times around your upper arm and hand. Once you have wrapped as much as you can fit, carefully slide the loops off of your arm and cut through all the strands at the same time. Remember to cut the yarn free from the skein as well.

Step 10
- Using lark’s head knots, attach the yarn to the chenille stem base, 2-3 strands at a time. Begin at the back of the head and work your way around toward the front on both sides. As you work, slide the knots together as much as possible so that the yarn is tightly packed. This will make the wig appear fuller.

- Once you have filled two thirds of the circlet base with yarn strands, check your wig by placing it on your pirate’s head. The yarn should be knotted far enough forward on the base so that it falls naturally against the sides of the face. Use the image as a guide.

- Braid small sections of the wig and thread a few Gold metallic pony beads onto some of the strands, as desired.
Step 11
- Once the wig is complete, place it onto your pirate’s head and adjust until the wig “hair” falls naturally.

- Unfold the bandanna and fold it in half from opposite corners, so that it is in a triangle shape. Place the folded end of the bandanna around your pirate’s forehead and wrap its ends around the sides of the head, making sure to cover the wig base, so that only the “hair” is showing.

- Pull the bandanna ends to the back of the head and tie them into a knot.
TIP: Make sure the point of the folded triangle is tucked underneath the knotted ends of the bandanna at the back of the head.
Step 12
- If desired, add a little pirate treasure. Fill two bracelets with Gold metallic pony beads and pom pom beads, then snap them on over the cuffs. Add a necklace of Mardi Gras beads and/or a pom pom garland to finish the costume.
