laurdiy® rock chic choker

Show off your style with this Rocker Chic Choker, specially designed by creator LaurDIY! This colorful necklace is super-easy to make – just read below. Lauren will show you how to weave this rainbow-hued cording, then clip on the cutest charms ever!
Step 1

Project Note: If you’re new to friendship bracelets and other DIY jewelry, here are a few techniques you might want to get familiar with before starting this project:

  • Square Knot
  • Basic Braiding
  • Half Knot
  • Overhand Knot
  • Double Overhand Knot

Cut three 10" lengths of multi-colored hemp cord. Join the cords together. Now, form the middle of the joined cords into a double overhand knot.

Step 2

Next, tape the overhand knot down. Bring the six cord ends together, then lay them side by side.

TIP: You’ll want to mentally number them in order (left cord is "1", the next one is "2", etc.) from left to right.

Step 3

Using an alternating square knot pattern, form cords 1 and 4 into a square knot around cords 2 and 3. Then, form cords 3 and 6 into a square knot around cords 4 and 5.

TIP: New to square knots? Click here for a quick video that’ll show you how.

Step 4
Repeat Step 3 until you reach a length that will wrap (comfortably!) around your neck.
Step 5
Now, divide the excess cords at the end into three groups of two cords each. Braid those cords snugly together to an approximate length of 2". Bring the braided cords back around to the base of the braid, forming a loop just large enough to allow you to pass through the double overhand knot that you made in Step 1.
Step 6
Divide the remaining lengths of cords into two groups of three cords each. Bring each group of cords, in different directions, back around the base of the braid and tie them there into a snug half knot. Separate the three cords on each side of the half knot, with cords 1, 2, and 3 on each side.
Step 7
Tie one cord from each side of the half knot together; make sure your knot is nice and snug. Repeat this step with the remaining cords. Carefully trim away the excess cord. Apply glue around these knots and allow them to dry.
Step 8
Clip the lobster clasps onto your charms. Put them wherever you’d like them along the center section of the necklace, so that they hang down.
