lily® sugar'n cream® crochet pie carrier

Keep your pies nice and warm in this cozy pie carrier.
Step 1
ABBREVIATIONS
Approx = Approximately
Ch = ChainHdc = Half double crochet
Rep = Repeat
Sc = Single crochet
Sk = Skip
Sl st = Slip stitch
St(s) = Stitch(es)

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS: Circumference = 9". This pattern will create a carrier that fits a standard 9" pie dish.

GAUGE: 11 hdc in jute = 4"; 12 hdc in yarn = 4". Save time and check your gauge.
Step 2
Instructions: Using the size J (6mm) hook, ch 5 and sl st into the first ch to form a ring. If you prefer, begin by making a magic circle instead.

1st rnd: Ch 2, then hdc 12, working each st into the ring itself. If you’ve made a magic circle, pull your ring tight at this point. Sl st to close the round.

2nd rnd: Ch 2 (this will count as your first hdc), then hdc into the first stitch. Hdc twice into each of the following sts. Once you’ve worked back to the beginning of the rnd, sl st into the second ch to complete the rnd.

3rd rnd: Ch 2. Hdc into the first st. *(Hdc once into the next st. Hdc twice into the following st.) Rep from *, so that you are making 2 hdc into every other st, until you’ve reached the beginning of the rnd. Sl st into the second ch to complete the rnd.

4th rnd: Ch 2. Hdc into the first st. *(Hdc once into each of the next two sts. Hdc twice into the following st.) Rep from *, so that you are making 2 hdc into every third st, until you’ve reached the beginning of the rnd. Sl st into the second ch to complete the rnd.

5th rnd: Ch 2. Hdc into the first st. *(Hdc once into each of the next three sts. Hdc twice into the following st.) Rep from *, so that you are making 2 hdc into every fourth st, until you’ve reached the beginning of the rnd. Sl st into the second ch to complete the rnd.

6th rnd: Ch 2. Hdc into the first st. *(Hdc once into each of the next four sts. Hdc twice into the following st.) Rep from *, so that you are making 2 hdc into every fifth st, until you’ve reached the beginning of the rnd. Sl st into the second ch to complete the rnd.

7th rnd: Ch 1. Sc into each st until you reach the beginning of the rnd again. Sl st into the ch to close. You have completed the bottom of the pie carrier.
Step 3
8th rnd: Now, you’ll begin working on the sides of the pie carrier. To create a vertical surface, you’ll work your sts into the wrong side of your work, just underneath the two loops you normally st into. Continue to hold your work as you have – do not turn – but move your hands toward you so that you can see the back of the sts on the rnd you just completed. You’ll see a strand of jute in each st which runs just underneath and parallel to the back loop of the st. Ch and sc, inserting your hook into that strand of jute just under the two loops of the st, and not into the loops themselves. Rep for each st in the rnd, until you reach your original ch. Sl st into the ch to close.

9th rnd: Ch 2. Sk the first st, and hdc into the next st, and every st after until you’ve reached the beginning of the rnd. Sl st into the second ch to complete the rnd.

10th rnd: Rep the previous rnd. Knot off the jute, trim and weave the ends in.

11th rnd: Switch to the G (4.25mm) hook, which you’ll use for the remainder of the project. Join the cotton yarn to the jute at the first st of the previous rnd. Ch 2. Sk the first st, then hdc into each remaining st of the rnd until you’ve reached the beginning of the rnd. Sl st into the second ch to complete the rnd.

12th rnd: You’ll begin to create the basket handles in this row. Ch 2 (which counts as your first st) and sk the first st. Working into the back loop only, hdc into each of the next 14 sts. Now you’ve completed 15 sts. Ch 12 and sk 6 sts in the round. Hdc into the 21st st. Continue to hdc around, working into the back loop only and counting your sts. At the 51st st, ch 12 and sk the next 6 sts in the round. Hdc into the 57th st. Hdc into each of the remaining sts, working into the back loop only, until you reach the beginning of the rnd. Sl st into the second ch to complete the rnd.

13th rnd: Ch 2 and sk the first st. Working into the back loop only, hdc into the second st and each one afterward, until you reach the ch 12 from the previous row. Work 24 hdc directly into the ch 12 sp. Hdc into the next st from the previous rnd and continue to hdc, working into the back loop only. When you reach the ch 12 space on the opposite side of the basket, again work 24 hdc directly into that sp. Hdc into each remaining st, working into the back loop only, until you reach the beginning of the rnd. Sl st into the second ch to complete the rnd.

14th rnd: Ch 1. Sc into each st until you reach the first basket handle. Sl st into each of the 24 sts in the basket handle. Continue to sc in each st around the pie carrier, until you reach the second basket handle. Again, sl st into each of the 24 sts in the basket handle. Continue to sc into each remaining st until you reach the beginning of the rnd again. Sl st into the ch to close.

Finishing: Knot off the yarn. Trim and weave in your ends.
