lion brand® heartland® & homespun® crochet ulla top

Want to make your own cozy cowl that is made from an easy-care yarn? Just pick your favorite colors of Lion Brand® Heartland® yarn; then follow the pattern to make this Ulla Crochet Top!
Step 1

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS:

S-L (1X-3X)

  • Finished Width: About 66" (76)" (157.5 (193) cm)
  • Finished Length: About 26" (27)" (66 (68.5) cm), not including cowl neck

Note: Pattern is written for smallest size, with changes for larger size in parentheses. When only one number is given, it applies to both sizes. To follow pattern more easily, circle all numbers pertaining to your size before beginning.

GAUGE:

  • 12 hdc = about 4¾" (12 cm) with smaller hook and A
  • 12 hdc = about 4½" (11.5 cm); 10 rows = about 4" (10 cm) with smaller hook and B

Be sure to check your gauge.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

  • Hdc2tog (Hdc 2 Sts Together): (Yarn over, insert hook in next st and draw up a loop) twice, yarn over and draw through all 5 loops on hook – 1 st decreased.

NOTES:

  • Top is made from 2 identical pieces: back and front.
  • Front and Back each begin with a center panel worked from lower edge. Side panels are worked along side edges of center panel.
  • Stitches are picked up around the neck edge to work cowl neck in the round.
Step 2

BACK:

Center Panel:

With smaller hook and A, ch 34 (47).

Row 1 (RS): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across – you will have 33 (46) sc.

Row 2: Ch 2 (counts as hdc), turn, sk first st, hdc in each st across.

Row 3: Ch 2 (counts as hdc), turn, sk first st, hdc in each st across working last hdc in top of beg ch-2.

Rep Row 3 until piece measures about 26" (27") (66 (68.5) cm) from beg.

Fasten off.

Step 3

First Side Panel:

Note: If you are right-handed, this panel is worked along the right side edge of the center panel. If you are left-handed, this panel is worked along the left side edge of the center panel.

From RS with smaller hook, join B with a sl st in lower corner of center panel, so that you are ready to work along one long side edge.

Row 1 (RS): Ch 1, work 70 (73) sc evenly spaced along side edge.

Row 2: Ch 2 (counts as hdc), turn, sk first st, hdc in each st across.

Row 3: Ch 2 (counts as hdc), turn, sk first st, hdc in each st across, working last hdc in top of beg ch-2.

Row 4 (Decrease Row – WS): Ch 2 (counts as hdc), turn, sk first st, hdc2tog, hdc in each st across, working last hdc in top of beg ch-2 – 69 (72) hdc.

Row 5 (Decrease Row – RS): Ch 2 (counts as hdc), turn, sk first st, hdc in each st to last 3 sts, hdc2tog, hdc in top of beg ch-2 – 68 (71) sts.

Rows 6-25: Rep Rows 4 and 5 for 10 more times – 48 (51) sts in Row 25.

Fasten off.

Step 4

Second Side Panel:

Note: If you are right-handed, this panel is worked along the left side edge of the center panel. If you are left-handed, this panel is worked along the right side edge of the center panel.

From RS with smaller hook, join B with a sl st in upper corner of center panel, so that you are ready to work along the remaining long side edge.

Row 1 (RS): Ch 1, work 70 (73) sc evenly spaced along side edge.

Row 2: Ch 2 (counts as hdc), turn, sk first st, hdc in each st across.

Row 3: Ch 2 (counts as hdc), turn, sk first st, hdc in each st across working last hdc in top of beg ch-2.

Row 4 (Decrease Row – WS): Ch 2 (counts as hdc), turn, sk first st, hdc in each st to last 3 sts, hdc2tog, hdc in top of beg ch-2 – 69 (72) sts.

Row 5 (Decrease Row – RS): Ch 2 (counts as hdc), turn, sk first st, hdc2tog, hdc in each st across, working last hdc in top of beg ch-2 – 68 (71) hdc.

Rows 6-25: Rep Rows 4 and 5 for 10 more times – 48 (51) sts in Row 25.

Fasten off.

Step 5

FRONT:

Make same as Back.

 

FINISHING:

Sew shoulder seams, leaving center 10" (11") (25.5 (28) cm) open for neck.

 

Cowl Neck:

From RS with smaller hook, join A with a sl st in either shoulder seam.

Rnd 1: Ch 2 (counts as hdc), work 26 (28) hdc evenly spaced along neck edge to next shoulder seam, work 26 (28) hdc evenly spaced along neck edge to beg of rnd; join with sl st in top of beg ch-2 – 52 (56) hdc.

Rnds 2-6: Ch 2 (counts as hdc), hdc in next st and each st around; join with sl st in top of beg ch-2.

Change to larger hook.

Rnds 7-13: Ch 2 (counts as hdc), hdc in next st and each st around; join with sl st in top of beg ch-2.

Fasten off.

Sew side edges of Front and Back together beg at lower corners and leaving about 9" (10") (23 (25.5) cm) unsewn for armholes.

Weave in ends.
