Step 1

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS: About 28" x 28" (71 cm x 71 cm), including border.

GAUGE: One Square = about 9" x 9" (23 x 23 cm); be sure to check your gauge.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

  • Ssk (Slip, Slip, Knit): Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right hand needle; insert left hand needle into fronts of these 2 sts and knit them together – 1 st decreased.

NOTES:

  • Square 1 is worked first, then subsequent squares are worked from stitches picked up from previous squares.
  • The miter on each square is shaped by working decreases.
  • A circular needle is used for the border. Work back and forth on the circular needle as if working on straight needles. Note: Squares can also be worked on the circular needle.


SQUARE 1:

With straight needles, cast on 80 sts.

Row 1 (WS): K40, place marker (pm), k40.

Row 2 (Decrease Row): Knit to 2 sts before marker, k2tog, slip marker, ssk, knit to end of row – at the end of this row you will have 78 sts.

Row 3: Knit.

Repeat Rows 2 and 3 until you have 4 sts remaining.

Last Row: K2tog, ssk – 2 sts.

K2tog and fasten off last st.

Note: Before beginning Squares 2-9, refer to diagram for where to pick up stitches. 

Step 2

SQUARE 2:

With straight needles, cast on 40 sts, pm, from RS and following diagram, pick up and k40 sts evenly spaced across edge of Square 1 – 80 sts.

Work as for Square 1.


SQUARE 3:

With straight needles, cast on 40 sts, pm, from RS and following diagram, pick up and k40 sts evenly spaced across edge of Square 2 – 80 sts.

Work as for Square 1.


SQUARE 4:

From RS with straight needles and following diagram, pick up and k40 sts evenly spaced across top of Square 1, pm, cast on 40 sts – 80 sts.

Work as for Square 1.


SQUARE 5:

From RS with straight needles and following diagram, pick up and k40 sts evenly spaced across top of Square 2, pm, then pick up and k40 sts evenly spaced along side of Square 4 – 80 sts.

Work as for Square 1. 


SQUARE 6:

From RS with straight needles and following diagram, pick up and k40 sts evenly spaced across top of Square 3, pm, then pick up and k40 sts evenly spaced along side of Square 5 – 80 sts.

Work as for Square 1.


SQUARE 7:  

From RS with straight needles and following diagram, pick up and k40 sts evenly spaced across top of Square 4, pm, cast on 40 sts – 80 sts.

Work as for Square 1.

Step 3

SQUARE 8: 

From RS with straight needles and following diagram, pick up and k40 sts evenly spaced across top of Square 5, pm, then pick up and k40 sts evenly spaced along side of Square 7 – 80 sts.

Work as for Square 1.


SQUARE 9:

From RS with straight needles and following diagram, pick up and k40 sts evenly spaced across top of Square 6, pm, then pick up and k40 sts evenly spaced along side of Square 8 – 80 sts.

Work as for Square 1.


FINISHING:

Border

From RS with circular needle and beginning in any corner of Afghan, *pick up and k120 sts evenly spaced across one side edge of Afghan, pm, repeat from * 3 more times – 480 sts.

You’ll be working back and forth in rows on the circular needle, just as if working on straight needles.

Row 1 (WS): Knit, slipping markers as you come to them.

Row 2 (Increase Row): Knit into front and then back of next st (kfb), *knit to 1 st before next marker, kfb, slip marker, kfb; repeat from * 2 more times, knit to last st, kfb – 8 sts increased, you’ll have 488 sts.

Rows 3-6: Repeat Rows 1 and 2.

Bind off.

Sew ends of border closed.

Weave in ends.
