Note: Pattern is written for smallest size with changes for larger sizes in parentheses. When only one number is given, it applies to all sizes. To follow pattern more easily, circle all numbers pertaining to your size before beginning.

GAUGE: 16 sts = about 3" (7.5 cm); 25 rows = about 4" (10 cm) in Twin Rib pattern; be sure to check your gauge

STITCH EXPLANATION:

  • M1 (Make 1): An increase worked by lifting the horizontal strand lying between needles and placing it onto the left needle. Knit this new stitch through the back loop – 1 st increased.

PATTERN STITCHES:

  • Twin Rib (worked over a multiple of 6 sts)
    • Row 1 (RS): *K3, p3; rep from * to end.
    • Row 2: *P1, k1; rep from * to end.
    • Rep Rows 1 and 2 for Twin Rib pattern.
  • K1, p1 Rib (worked over an odd number of sts)
    • Row 1: K1, *p1, k1; rep from * to end of row.
    • Row 2: K the knit sts and p the purl sts.
    • Rep Row 2 for K1, p1 Rib.
Step 2

NOTES:

  • Cardigan is worked in 3 pieces: Body and 2 Sleeves.
  • Lower edge of Sleeves and Body are worked in a Twin Rib pattern.
  • The Sleeves are worked first, then the Body is worked from lower edge up to underarms. At underarms, the piece is divided for front and back and Sleeves are joined.
  • The Yoke is worked in 3 different colorwork patterns. Colorwork can be worked by following the written instructions or the charts. When working from charts, read RS rows from right to left and WS rows from left to right.
  • Ribbed front bands are worked in one with the Body and yoke.
  • A circular needle is used to accommodate the number of sts in the Body. Work back and forth in rows on the circular needle just as if working on straight needles.
  • When you see 'work in pattern as established' in the instructions, this means to work the next row of the pattern sts, lining up sts as in previous rows.
  • When you see ‘work even’ in the instructions, this means to continue in the pattern st you have established without changing the st count by increasing, decreasing, or binding off.
Step 3

SLEEVES (make 2):

With A, cast on 54 (54, 54, 60, 60) sts.

Beg with a WS (purl) row, work in St st (k on RS, p on WS) for 7 rows.

Beg with Row 1 of pattern, work in Twin Rib for 10 (8, 4, 4, 2) rows.

Increase Row (RS): Work 1 st in Twin Rib pattern as established, M1, work in Twin Rib pattern as established to last st, M1, work last st in Twin Rib pattern as established – you will have 56 (56, 56, 62, 62) sts in this row.

Work even in Twin Rib pattern as established, working new sts into pattern, for 9 (7, 3, 3, 1) row(s).

Rep last 10 (8, 4, 4, 2) rows for 0 (2, 5, 6, 11) more times – 56 (60, 66, 74, 84) sts.

Note: When you see ‘0’ repeats in a instruction, this means that for that size, you should not work any sts, just skip to the next part of the instruction.

Work even in Twin Rib pattern as established until piece measures about 16" (16", 16½", 16½", 16½") (40.5 (40.5, 42, 42, 42) cm) from beg, end with a WS row as the last row you work.

Next 2 Rows: Bind off 5 (6, 6, 8, 9) sts, work in Twin Rib pattern as established to end of row – 46 (48, 54, 58, 66) sts when all bind offs have been completed.

Place rem 46 (48, 54, 58, 66) sts on a holder.

Step 4

BODY:

With A, cast on 185 (209, 227, 251, 275) sts.

Row 1 (RS): Work Row 1 of K1, p1 Rib over first 7 sts for right front band, place marker (pm), work Row 1 of Twin Rib pattern to last 10 sts, k3, pm, work Row 1 of K1, p1 Rib over last 7 sts for left front band.

Row 2: Work in K1, p1 Rib as established to first marker, slip marker (sm), k1, work Row 2 of Twin Rib pattern to next marker, sm, work in K1, p1 Rib as established to end of row.

Row 3: Work in K1, p1 Rib as established to first marker, slip marker (sm), work Row 1 of Twin Rib pattern to 3 sts before marker, k3, sm, work in K1, p1 Rib as established to end of row.

Rep Rows 2 and 3 until piece measures about 14" (35.5 cm) from beg, end with a WS row as the last row you work.

Step 5

Divide for Fronts and Back:

Next Row (RS): Work in K1, p1 Rib as established to first marker, sm, work in Twin Rib pattern as established over next 36 (42, 46, 51, 56) sts for right front, bind off next 10 (12, 12, 16, 18) sts for underarm, continue in Twin Rib pattern as established over next 78 (86, 96, 102, 112) sts (you’ll have 79 (87, 97, 103, 113) sts for back), bind off next 10 (12, 12, 16, 18) sts for underarm, work in Twin Rib pattern as established to next marker for left front, sm, work in K1, p1 Rib as established to end of row – 165 (185, 203, 219, 239) sts.

Yoke:

Next Row (Joining Row – WS): Work in K1, p1 Rib as established to first marker, sm, p the left front sts, p46 (48, 54, 58, 66) sts of one sleeve from holder, p the back sts, p46 (48, 54, 58, 66) sts of 2nd sleeve from holder, p the right front sts, sm, work in K1, p1 Rib as established to end of row – 257 (281, 311, 335, 371) sts.

Keeping sts of front bands in K1, p1 Rib as established, work even in St st for 0 (2, 4, 8, 12) rows.

Next Row (Buttonhole Row – RS): K1, p1, k1, yo, k2tog (for buttonhole), p1, k1, sm, k to last marker, sm, work in K1, p1 Rib as established to end of row.
