loops & threads® charisma® big! knit cardigan

Cool weather calls for a comfy thick sweater. This cardigan is just the trick, perfect to layer on when you start to feel that chill in the air. 
Step 1

SIZES: Extra Small (Small, Medium, Large, X-Large)

  • 3 (3, 3, 4, 4) – Loops & Threads® Charisma™ Big! Yarn – Steel
  • 1 (1, 2, 2, 2) – Loops & Threads® Charisma™ Big! Yarn – Granite

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS: Bust = 36" (40", 44", 48", 52") [92 cm (102 cm, 112 cm, 122 cm, 132cm)]

GAUGE: 12 sts x 16 rows = 4" (10 cm) with larger needles; save time and check your gauge

SPECIAL STITCH EXPLANATION:

  • W&T (Wrap and Turn): With yarn held to the back, slip next st purl-wise, bring yarn to front, sl st back to left-hand needle purl-wise, bring yarn to back, turn work.

PATTERN NOTES:

  • Cardigan is worked in one piece from the neck down. The yoke (upper body) is worked in reverse stockinette, so the purl stitches will be the right side of the fabric. The sleeves and lower body will be worked in stockinette with the knit stitches as the right side of the fabric.

Step 2

INSTRUCTIONS:

Yoke

With Steel, and smaller needles, cast on 28 (30, 32, 34, 36) sts.

Row 1 (RS): P1 for left front, pm, p4 for left sleeve, pm, p18 (20, 22, 24, 26) sts for back, pm, p4 for right sleeve, pm, p1 for right front.

Row 2 (WS): *Kfb, sl m, kfb, k to 1 st before next m; rep from * 2 more times, kfb, sl m, kfb – 36 (38, 40, 42, 44) sts.

Join Granite, begin working in 2 row stripes, 2 rows of Granite, followed by 2 rows of Steel, repeated until the end of the Yoke.

Row 3 and All RS Rows: Purl across.

Row 4: Kfb, *kfb, slip marker, kfb, knit to 1 st before next marker; rep from * 2 more times, kfb, slip m, kfb, kfb – 46 (48, 50, 52, 54) sts.

Row 6: *Knit to 1 st before marker, kfb, slip m, kfb; rep from * 3 more times, knit to end – 8 sts inc’d.

Row 8: Kfb, *knit to 1 st before marker, kfb, slip m, kfb; rep from * 3 more times, knit to last 2 sts, kfb, k1 – 10 sts inc’d.

Rep Rows 6-9, 2 (3, 2, 1, 2) more times.

Rep Rows 8-9, 3 (3, 7, 9, 9) more times.


Extra Small and Small Only

Row 1 (WS): Kfb, knit to last 2 sts, kfb, k1 – 2 sts inc’d.

Rows 2 & 4 (RS): Purl.

Row 3: Kfb, *knit to 1 st before marker, kfb, sl m, kfb; rep from * 3 more times, knit to last 2 sts, kfb, k1 – 10 sts inc’d.


Large and X-Large Only

Rep Rows 6-7, 2 more times.

Step 3

All Sizes

Row 1 (WS): Knit.

Rows 2 & 4 (RS): Purl.

Row 3: *Knit to 1 st before marker, kfb, slip m, kfb; rep from * 3 more times, knit to end – 8 sts inc’d.

Rep Rows 1-4, 3 (3, 4, 3, 3) more times - 174 (184, 204, 216, 236) sts.

Knit one more WS row.

Cut both colors of yarn.


Divide Stitches

Working across a right side row, slip all the stitches to the next marker on a stitch holder for the first front, slip the next 36 (38, 42, 44, 48) sts on a stitch holder for the first sleeve, slip all the stitches to the next marker on a stitch holder for the cardigan back, slip the next 36 (38, 42, 44, 48) sts on a stitch holder for the second sleeve, slip the remaining stitches on a holder for the 2nd front.


Sleeve

Place one set of sleeve stitches on the larger circular needle ready to work a RS row.

With Steel, cast on 4 (4, 4, 5, 5) sts, knit across sleeve stitches, cast on 4 (4, 4, 5, 5) sts - 44 (46, 50, 54, 58) sts.

Work 5 more rows in Stockinette, purling WS rows and knitting RS rows.

Dec Row (RS): K2, k2tog, k to last 4 sts, ssk, k2 – 2 sts dec’d.

Repeat Dec Row every 8th row 5 (6, 8, 7, 7) more times.

Repeat Dec Row every 6th row 0 (0, 0 , 2, 3) more times – 30 (32, 32, 34, 36) sts rem.


Step 4

Cuff

Change to smaller Circular needles.

Rows 1-2: Knit with Steel.

Rows 3-4: Knit with Granite.

Rep last 4 rows until edging measures approx. 4” (10 cm), ending with Row 2.

Bind off leaving a long tail.

With tail sew sleeve seam.

Repeat for 2nd set of sleeve stitches.


Body

Place 3 sets of stitches still on holders onto larger circular, ready to work a RS row.

Row 1 (RS): Knit to armhole, pickup and knit 6 (6, 6, 8, 8) sts across underarm cast-on, knit across back, pick up and knit 6 (6, 6, 8, 8) sts across underarm cast-on, knit to end -

With Steel, work in Stockinette, knitting RS rows and purling WS rows, until body measures 15" (14½", 16", 16½", 17") [38 cm (37 cm, 41 cm, 42 cm, 43 cm)], ending with a WS row.


Bottom Edging

Change to smaller circular needle.

Rows 1-2: With Steel, K.

Rows 3-4: With Granite, K.

Rep last 4 rows until edging measures approx. 4” (10 cm), ending with Row 2.

BO all sts.

Step 5

Front Edging

With Steel and smaller circular needle, pick up and k 57 (55, 60, 61, 63) sts along bottom edging and body, place marker 1, 29 (33, 34, 36, 38) sts along yoke, 28 (30, 32, 34, 36) sts along CO edge, 29 (33, 34, 36, 38) sts along yoke, place marker 2, 57 (55, 60, 61, 63) sts along body and bottom edging – 200 (206, 220, 228, 238) sts.

You may wish to use different color to help remember marker numbers. When you reach the short row, “gap” refers to the space left by the last w&t.

Knit 3 rows.

Buttonhole Row 1 (RS): K12 (10, 10, 12, 12), bind off 2 sts, *k7 (7, 8, 8, 9), bind off 2 sts, k8 (8, 9, 9, 9), bind off 2 sts; rep from * once more, knit to end.

Buttonhole Row 2 (WS): Knit to marker 1, k5 (5, 6, 5, 5), cast on 2 sts, *k8 (8, 9, 9, 9), cast on 2 sts, k7 (7, 8, 8, 9), cast on 2 sts; rep from * once more knit to end.

Short Row: Knit to marker 2, w&t, knit to m1, w&t, *knit to 3 before the “gap”, w&t; rep from * 21 (25, 25, 27, 29) more times, knit to end, hiding wraps toward the RS as you reach them.

Next Row: K across, hiding wraps toward the RS as you reach them.

Knit 2 more rows.

Bind off all sts loosely.


Finishing: Weave in ends. Sew 5 buttons onto edging opposite buttonholes.


Step 6
