Handmade placemats of natural bamboo with copper leaf over ultramarine blue in a distressed, gloss-coated finish that looks slightly different in every type of light. Measuring appx 11.5" high by appx 18" wide, they feature a matching sapphire blue felt backing (made from recycled bottles!) to protect your tabletop from scratches and scuffs. Bamboo pieces are adhered to a thin mesh backing, painted ultramarine blue, and dried. Copper leaf foil is then applied, allowed to set, and dry-brushed to remove loose material so that an antique-like crackly imperfect finish is achieved. As a final step, they get two coats of thick clear glossy lacquer before being assembled with their felt backing. These are an eye-catching combination of "nature" and "artifice" -- the gorgeous bright glow of the metal leaf plays beautifully against the staggered cut ends of the bamboo. Equally pleasing with formal china or casual stoneware, great for every day, MARVELOUS for a holiday table or special event. Scaled to accommodate a standard dinner- or luncheon-sized plate flanked with utensils, but narrow enough that you're not likely to put a top-heavy wine glass down on the upper edge, so they're extra nice for smaller tables. Gently brush clean or wipe with a damp cloth when needed; store flat or folded with the bamboo side facing out.
