martha stewart harvest wood sign

Warm up your fall décor with this Harvest Wood Sign from Martha Stewart! Her adhesive stencils and paints make this DIY a cinch. Just follow the step-by-step instructions below to get started on stenciling your own pretty plaque!
Step 1

Project Notes:

  • Before you start, practice your stenciling technique and check your color by making a sample print on a scrap piece of paper.
  • Have you stenciled before? It’s easy to do once you know the basics. Hey, look, here they are:
    • Remove your stencil by peeling it away from its clear backer sheet. Save the backer sheet so you can replace the stencil once you’re done.
    • Place the stencil onto your surface. Make sure it’s just where you want it, then press it into place.
    • Pour a small amount of paint onto your palette or a paper plate. Load paint sparingly onto your stencil brush, foam pouncer or dauber by dipping its bottom into the paint, then dab off any excess paint.
    • Lightly dab a thin layer of paint onto your surface, until all the stencil’s open areas are covered. Apply a second coat, if you need to.
    • Work one color at a time, painting in all the stencil sections for that color before you move on to the next.
    • Keep going! Apply paint until all of the stencil’s open areas are filled.
    • While the paint’s still wet, carefully peel off the stencil. Wipe off any excess paint and stick the stencil onto its backer sheet again.

Before you begin stenciling, lightly sand your pallet sign to remove any rough spots.

Step 2
Start by placing the main stencil design, centered, onto your pallet sign. Use the medium dauber and Copper paint to stencil the design onto the wood surface. While your paint’s still wet, peel away the stencil and let the paint dry.
Step 3
Repeat Step 2 to add leaves to the top and bottom of the pallet sign. For these smaller stencils, use the small dauber and Copper paint. Let this paint dry, too.
Step 4
That’s all there is to it! Make sure you wash all your stencils, brushes and tools immediately after using them, before any of the paint that’s on them can dry. Store your clean stencils on the clear backer paper.
