metal stamped home usa necklace

Step 1
Project Note: Metal stamping takes patience and practice. Practice as needed to learn how much force is needed to produce the desired results. To avoid getting a double imprint or "ghost" print, do not move the letter stamp while striking. Be sure to face the letter stamp in the right direction prior to stamping.

Cut a short length of tape and tape down an aluminum USA blank onto a steel block. Place the tape along the vertical edge of each side of the blank.
Step 2
Place a third strip of tape across the bottom of the blank horizontally, in between the two vertical strips, so that the tape holds the blank but does not cover the entire surface. Leave room for stamping in the center of the blank.
Step 3
Align a ruler at the bottom of the blank and mark on the horizontal strip of tape with a fine tip Sharpie® marker where the letters are to be stamped.

TIP: For best results, place a mark every 1/8".
Step 4
Stamp each letter of “home” by holding the letter stamp with one hand and holding the brass mallet in the other hand. Hold the letter stamp at a 90° angle on the steel block. Strike the letter stamp several times with medium force.
Step 5
Remove the horizontal tape strip carefully and stamp the heart below “home”. Remove all tape and set stamped USA charm aside.
Step 6
Repeat Step 1 for a circle blank.
Step 7
Repeat Step 4 to stamp “Home Made” on the circle blank.
Step 8
Apply a thin coat of black enamel on top of the letter imprint. Wipe excess enamel away with a paper towel.
Step 9
Open the jump ring on the stamped circle charm using chain nose pliers and loop the jump ring through the jump ring on the lobster clasp of the necklace. Close jump ring.

TIP: To open and close a jump ring, simply grasp the jump ring on both sides with chain nose pliers and twist the ring open side-to-side. Never pull the jump ring, which can cause distortion.
Step 10
Open the clasp of the necklace and slide on the USA charm.
