metallic paper butterflies

Make magic happen when you create a swarm of shining butterflies! All you’ll need is a Cricut® machine and your choice of metallic cardstock. We’ve partnered with Craftsy® to show you exactly how easy it is to find your design, cut it out and decorate… well, EVERYTHING! Let’s do it!
Step 1
Project Notes:
We’ve got a video that’ll show you how to make these beautiful butterflies. Want to see it? Click here.

TIP: For this project, we are going to show you how to make fabulous magnets; however, these butterflies are so versatile, you can put them almost anywhere! Try sticking them onto banners, walls or even a colorful painted canvas!

First, log into the Cricut® Design Space™ and the ‘Images’ icon on the left side of your canvas screen.
Step 2
Select a butterfly design that youlike, and size it to fit your cardstock.

TIP: You’ll want your butterflies to be large enough so that everyone can see all their lovely details! For that reason, we recommend you size them so that four will fit onto your 12"x12" cardstock.
Step 3
Next, place your cardstock onto the cutting mat with its shiny side facing up, and then press down firmly to make sure it’s fastened in place.
Step 4
Now, load your cutting mat into your Cricut® machine and follow the prompts to cut out your butterfly shapes.

TIP: Be sure you have your Cricut® set to cut the correct material before you cut.
Step 5
Next, carefully peel your butterflies away from the cutting mat. You can use the spatula tool from your basic tool set to help prevent curling.
Step 6
Although most of the pieces in the negative spaces will be left behind on your mat, you may still have a few that hang on as you peel your butterflies from the mat. Just use your weeder tool to carefully poke them out from each butterfly.
Step 7
Let’s give each butterfly some dimension! Lightly draw two vertical lines down the sides of each butterfly’s abdomen, in between the wings, with the point of your weeder tool. Now fold your butterfly’s wings inward on the score line you just drew so that they stand up freely when released. Repeat for each butterfly.
Step 8
Add a dab of hot glue to the back (non-shiny) side of one butterfly’s abdomen and then, while the glue is still hot, attach it to a magnet. Repeat to add a magnet to each butterfly.

TIP: If you’re looking for a temporary hold, try using Glue Dots® instead.
