Colourful Mitered Afghan (Crochet)

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4" (10cm) square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATIONS

dc3tog (dc 3 sts together) Yarn over, insert hook into st and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops. (Yarn over, insert hook into next st and draw up a loop. Yarn over, draw through 2 loops) twice. Yarn over and draw through all loops on hook – 2 sts decreased.

FPDC (front post double crochet) Yo, insert hook from front to back then to front, going around post of indicated st, draw up a loop, (yo and draw through 2 loops on hook) twice. Skip st behind the FPDC. Note: In this design, post sts are worked around sts 2 rnds below. This means that they are worked around the sts in the rnd numbered 2 less than the rnd being worked. For example, if you are working Rnd 3 and are instructed to work "around st 2 rnds below", you will work around a st in Rnd 1. Take care to skip the st 'behind' the FPDC.

sc3tog (sc 3 sts together) Insert hook into st and draw up a loop. (Insert hook into next st and draw up a loop) twice.Yarn over, draw through all 4 loops on hook – 2 sts decreased.

sc5tog (sc 5 sts together) Insert hook into st and draw up a loop. (Insert hook into next st and draw up a loop) 4 times. Yarn over, draw through all 6 loops on hook – 4 sts decreased.

NOTES

  • Afghan is made from 10 Large Squares and 40 Small Squares.
  • The Squares are worked separately, then sewn together following the Assembly Diagram (download below). An edging is then worked around the outside edge of the Afghan.
  • Each Square is worked back and forth in rows, with a decrease worked at the center of each row to form the miter. Sc rows are alternated with dc rows. When working a dc row, a dc3tog (decrease 2 sts) is worked in the center of the row. When working a sc row (except first row), a sc5tog (decrease 4 sts) is worked in the center of the row.
  • A stitch marker is used to mark the center of each row, where the decreases will be worked. If you can ‘read’ your crochet, you will not need to use the marker.
  • The ch 1 at the beg of the sc rows does not count as a st; the ch 3 at the beg of the dc rows does count as the first dc.

LARGE SQUARE (make 10 – 2 each with A, B, C, D, and E)

Ch 76.

Row 1 (RS): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next 35 ch, sc3tog, sc in next 36 ch – 73 sts at the end of this row.

Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc in this row and in all following rows), turn, dc in next 34 sts, dc3tog, dc in last 35 sts – 71 sts.

Row 3: Ch 1, turn, sc in first 33 sts, sc5tog, sc in last 33 sts – 67 sts.

Row 4: Ch 3, turn, dc in next 31 sts, dc3tog, dc in last 32 sts – 65 sts.

Row 5: Ch 1, turn, sc in first 30 sts, sc5tog, place marker in sc5tog just made, sc in last 30 sts – 61 sts.

Row 6: Ch 3, turn, dc in each st to 1 st before marker, remove marker, dc3tog, replace marker in dc3tog just made, dc in each st to end of row – 59 sts.

Row 7: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st to 2 sts before marker, remove marker, sc5tog, replace marker in sc5tog just made, sc in each st to end of row – 55 sts.

Rows 8–23: Rep last 2 rows 8 more times – 7 sts at the end of Row 23. Remove stitch marker.

Row 24: Ch 3, turn, dc in next st, dc3tog, dc in last 2 sts – 5 sts.

Row 25: Ch 3, turn, dc in first st, sk next 3 sts, sl st in last st.

Fasten off.

SMALL SQUARE (make 40 – 8 each with A, B, C, D, and E)

Ch 40.

Row 1 (RS): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next 17 sc, sc3tog, place marker in sc3tog just made, sc in next 18ch – 37 sts at the end of this row.

Rows 2-11: Rep Rows 6 and 7 of Large Square five times – 7 sts rem at the end of Row 11.

Rows 12 and 13: Rep Rows 24 and 25 of Large Square.

FINISHING

Arrange Squares as shown in Assembly Diagram and sew together.

NOTES

  • To join with a sc; Make a slip knot on hook, then insert hook into specified st and draw up a loop, yarn over and complete the sc in the usual way.
  • To make it easier to work a large number of sc evenly spaced across the outside edges of the Afghan, you may wish to divide the edges into smaller sections. For instance, if you divide the longer edge into quarters, then you would work approximately 46-47 sc along each quarter section of the long edge.

Rnd 1: With RS facing, join E with an sc in any corner to work across one long side edge, ch 1, work 185 sc evenly spaced across long edge, ch 2 (corner), work 151 sc evenly spaced across short edge, ch 2, work 186 sc evenly spaced across long edge, ch 2, work 151 sc evenly spaced across short edge, ch 2, join with sl st in first sc.

Rnd 2: Ch 1, *sc in each sc to next corner ch-2 sp, (sc, ch 2, sc) in corner ch-2 sp; rep from * 3 more times; join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off.

Rnd 3: With RS facing, join A with a sl st in any corner ch-2 sp to work across one long side edge, ch5 (counts as dc, ch 2), dc in same ch-2 sp, *dc in next sc, (FPDC around next sc 2 rnds below, dc in next 4 sc) 37 times, FPDC around next sc 2 rnds below, dc in next sc, (dc, ch 2, dc) in corner ch-2 sp, dc in next sc, (FPDC around next sc 2 rnds below, dc in next 4 sc) 30 times, FPDC around next sc 2 rnds below, dc in next sc**, (dc, ch 2, dc) in next corner ch-2 sp; rep from * to**; join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch. Fasten off.

Weave in ends.
