Step 1

First, pre-load your small wreath board with cable ties. Start on row #1, load a cable tie at every other set of holes beginning with the set of holes marked with the number 1. With the board front facing up, push the tail (pointy end) of the cable tie down through the hole and up through the hole next to it. Feed the tail into the head (boxy end) and pull until you hear a "zip" or feel it clicking. Leave extra loose for the next steps. Repeat until every other set of holes has been filled with a cable tie.

Step 2

Cut your mesh into lengths of 10" long.
TIP: You will need 36 petals to complete this flower not including leaves (optional).

Step 3

Position one piece of mesh with its natural curl facing upwards in a diamond configuration. Fold the top corner down to bottom corner. Rotate mesh 90°. Depending on the direction you rotated your mesh you will have a tail on either your left or right side. Pinch the tail off with your fingers about 2" from the end and scrunch together the material. Your petal should resemble an umbrella.

Step 4

Choose a cable tie to populate on row #1. Insert your petal with the tail facing inward toward the center of the board. Push the tail in up to the point at which you have pinched off the mesh and pull the cable tie locking it tight. Cut excess cable tie material with wire cutters.

Step 5

Repeat Steps 3-4 seven more times until all cable ties are holding petals.

Step 6

Pre-load a second set of cable ties in all holes that have petals attached already. Take the corner of every petal and insert them into the pre-loaded cable tie on the petal next to them. Pull cable tie locking it tight. Repeat until all petal corners are anchored to cable ties. This will form a “flower” formation on the outside of the board. Trim excess mesh tails if necessary.

Step 7

Pre-load cable ties in all holes on row #4. There are lines between the holes to indicate the individual sets of holes.

Step 8

Create a petal as you did in Step 3. Choose a cable tie to populate on row #4. Insert tail facing inward pointing towards the center of the board. Your petal will have a natural curl inward on one side once folded. Insert with this curve facing inwards to help with the natural shape of the flower. Repeat the same procedure with the opposite hole on row #4.

Step 9

For the next two petals on row #4 insert tail facing to the outside of the board by inserting from the center out.

Step 10

Take a petal and curl one corner inwards on itself creating a tight spiral cone. Curl the opposite corner around the cone. Take the petal next to it and continue to wrap around the center adding layers. Repeat with the next two petals.
TIP: You can use clothespins or a dab of hot glue from a hot glue gun to hold the petal in place if necessary.

Step 11

Using a chenille stem, secure the flower center 1/4 way up from the board and tighten to add structure to your flower center.

Step 12

Pre-load cable ties in all holes on row #3.

Step 13

Create petal. Choose a cable tie to populate on row #3. Insert into the cable tie with the tail pointing out. Wrap the corners of the petal around flower center. Working in one direction repeat this process wrapping each petal around each other creating layers.

Step 14

Pre-load cable ties in all holes on row #2 as well as the remaining eight empty sets of holes on row #1.

Step 15

Create a petal. Choose a cable tie to populate on row #2. Insert tail facing outwards. Wrap petal around flower center. Repeat until all eight petals are attached.

Step 16

Create a petal. Choose a cable tie to populate on row #1. Insert tail facing outwards. Tuck the tail under the petals that crisscross over the rim of the board. Repeat until all eight petals are attached.

Step 17

Turn board over and remove excess mesh tails produced in the previous step.

Step 18

Locate the hanging holes as they are the only holes on the board that are countersunk, and they are located at the top of the board where there is a series of four holes positioned closely together. Insert cable tie through the back side of the board through one hanging hole and feed it back through the other hanging hole and lock your cable tie in place to your desired length.
TIPS:

  • Keep a small receptacle for disposing of waste while wreath making, this helps keep your work-space clean and makes tidying up much easier.
  • Also using good scissors to cut your cable tie tails will dull your scissors very quick. Using wire cutters to cut cable tie ends is recommended.
  • To help pull cable ties tight and not hurt your fingers using needle nose pliers to pull tight works very well.
