plaster of paris wall décor

Freshen up your wall decor for Spring with this bright canvas craft..
Step 1
Project Note: Materials used for mixing plaster should not be re-purposed for any projects other than plaster. Wear gloves when handling plaster and do not breathe in plaster powder. Work in a well-ventilated area. Before you begin, you need to prep your work area. Lay a large sheet of palette paper on your work surface. Have paper towels handy as well as disposable rubber gloves. Do not pour plaster down the sink, as it can clog your pipes. Discard of any unused plaster in the trash.
Step 2
Place your 12”x12” canvas face down on a cutting mat (or scrap piece of cardboard). Hold the canvas down with one hand and cut the inside of the canvas out with an X-ACTO® knife, using your other hand. Cut as close to the edge of the canvas frame as possible. Your goal is to get a clean straight edge.

Step 3
Once the canvas is removed, lay what was the front of the canvas frame down onto the center of your palette paper. The palatte paper will prevent the plaster from sticking. Next, use a package of Sculpey® III clay to create a seal around the outside edge of the canvas frame. This will prevent the plaster from leaking out onto your work surface. Tear the clay into several large pieces and roll it in your hands or on the table to create thin, long pieces. Seal the sides of the canvas frame to the palette paper with the long pieces of clay, pressing it down to fill in the gap between the palette and the canvas, creating a nice seal.

Step 4
Lay your stencil sheet down on the palette paper on the inside of your canvas frame. Be sure to center the stencil sheet.

Step 5
Mix the plaster of Paris. With gloves on your hands, scoop two cups of plaster into your bucket using either a foam or plastic cup. Pour two cups of water to make a 2 to 2 ratio of plaster and cool water. Use your hand to mix the plaster and water to eliminate large clumps.

Step 6
Slowly pour the plaster mixture into your canvas. Pour enough plaster to cover at least 1” from the top of your canvas. Let the plaster sit for 24 hours.

Step 7
Remove the clay seal from the edge of your canvas. Hold the canvas upright and carefully start to pop the plaster out from the canvas frame by pressing on the back of the plaster around the perimeter of the frame. Do not let the plaster fall or drop onto your work surface, as it can break. Once the plaster is removed, lay it flat on your work surface, stencil side up. Carefully peel the stencil sheet off from the front of the plaster. You now have a raised 3D stencil design.

Note: Your plaster may have uneven jagged edges, which is okay, as you may prefer this unique hand-crafted look. However, take care with the edges as they are thin and fragile. If the plaster feels cold to the touch it is still wet inside and may require another 24-72 hours to dry completely. Dry time will vary depending on climate.

Step 8
Seal the plaster with a layer of white gesso. Use a foam brush to paint the gesso on in an even layer. Be sure the gesso does not collect in the crevices of the stencil pattern. Smooth out any thick or uneven gesso areas before it dries. Allow gesso to dry 20 minutes. Rinse your foam brush.

Step 9
Now it’s time to paint your plaster wall décor. Pour a small amount of the following paint colors onto a clean sheet of palette paper: French Teal chalk paint, Deep Turquoise acrylic paint and Spring Pasture acrylic paint. Using a clean foam brush, randomly brush on a thin layer of the French Teal chalk paint. Take care not to paint too thick of a layer in the center stencil design. Use a damp paper towel to spread the paint around, working it into the surface and lifting the color in certain areas, giving it a distressed look. Use this same method with the remaining paint colors on your palette, blending colors in some areas as you go along. Once you’ve reached a desired look with the paint, set your wall décor aside to dry for at least 20 minutes.

Step 10
When the paint is dry, use a small or medium sized round foam Spouncer™ to pounce on an accent color. Dab the foam Spouncer™ several times down onto a Moss Green ink pad to load the ink. Dab or pounce the ink onto the plaster wall décor, giving certain areas a pop of color. You can also apply the ink around the edges as well. Rinse your foam applicator.

Step 11
To highlight the beautiful stencil design that may have gotten slightly lost by the paint application, pounce on a thin layer of white acrylic paint using the round foam Spouncer™. Avoid loading too much paint onto the Spouncer™ as you only want a thin layer. Dab or pounce the stencil design areas that you want to highlight and make more visible. This will bring attention to the raised 3D stencil design. Set aside to dry eight minutes.

Step 12
To hang your wall décor, you will need to create two small holes, one on the upper left and one on the upper right corner of the main plaster piece. Do not drill into the fagile jagged edges as these are to fragile to support the weight of the piece. To drill the holes carefully turn your wall décor over and lay the piece flat on your work surface. Use a mini screw driver to create a 2 mm round hole by slowly “drilling” the hole until you poke the screwdriver all the way through the plaster.

Step 13
When your paint is completely dry, apply a spray sealant to protect the paint. Spray the wall décor outside or in a well-ventilated area. Set aside to dry 15 minutes.

Measure and cut a 12” length of jute twine. Thread each end of the twine through the each hole and tie a double knot to secure. Trim ends of twine.
