You're somewhat experienced with the skills necessary to complete this project, but you haven't mastered all the elements, yet.

pom pom solar system pillow

This pillow is sure to delight the tiny Neil deGrasse Tyson fan in your life. Plus, it’s just the thing to use up those leftover bits of yarn in your stash. But, don’t let that stop you from buying a few new hues, too – there’s always room for more yarn, right? We totally get it.
Step 1
Project Note: This pillow is sure to delight the tiny Neil deGrasse Tyson fan in your life, and it’s just the thing to use up those bits and bobs of brightly-colored yarn you have got lying around. However, don’t let us stop you from buying all new hues, just keep that stash growing!

To make the sun, hold all three strands (Butterscotch, Sunny Day and Gold yarns) together at once and wrap them loosely around the width of your palm 100 times. Gently slide the entire bundle of looped yarn off of your hand, keeping it as still as possible so that you do not disturb the loops. Knot one 10" piece of yarn as tightly as you can around the center of the bundle. With scissors, cut open all the loops on both ends.
Step 2
Follow the instructions on your pom pom maker packaging to make all eight planets.

TIP: We won’t hold it against you if you still consider Pluto the ninth planet.
Step 3
To make the swirly colors, try wrapping the pom pom maker while holding both colors of yarn at one time, or create blocks of colors by wrapping some sections with one color, and some sections with another. Feel free to be as creative as you like when combining colors.

TIP: To make the pom poms as shown, see legend at the bottom.
Step 4
When each pom pom is finished, use scissors to trim it as evenly as possible. You can continue to trim to make each pom pom a little smaller so it fits better on the pillow. To make the rings of Saturn, trim down both ends of a pom pom, but leave a band around the center that is untrimmed, so that the yarn sticks out farther.
Step 5
To make the pillow, cut two 20" x 20" squares from the black fabric. Set one square aside.
Step 6
With the one square fabric piece, use a blue marking pencil to mark the orbital paths. Mark the paths about 2" apart.

TIP: Trace a large mixing bowl to get a nice curve.
Step 7
Select a different color of embroidery floss for each path, and sew a running stitch along each traced curve.
Step 8
Once you have sewn all the paths, match up the two pieces of fabric with right sides facing inward. Use the sewing machine, threaded with black, to sew together three sides of the pillow cover with a ½" seam allowance on each side.

TIP: You can press open each seam with an iron, then trim away the excess seam allowance at the corners by cutting diagonally.
Step 9
Flip the pillow cover right side out. Sew the pom poms directly onto the pillow by stitching up into the center of each one, and then down again a few times.

TIP: You can also use VELCRO® Brands coin to attach them or even just use hot glue.
Step 10
Slip the pillow form into the pillow cover, fold in the ½" at the top of the open seam on each side and stitch this remaining seam together with thread and needle. Once you’re done, make sure you take at least a little nap on the pillow.
