I am new to doing anything fancy with cupcakes, but this corer made it easy to add a surprise jam filling to a batch of strawberry cupcakes. I didn't mess up any in 2 dozen! (Strawberry cake mix zhushed up with butter, vanilla, and a bit of almond flavoring, finished with strawberry jam filling, strawberry canned frosting whipped up with a mixer and piped, topped with a strawberry wedge. Everyone thought they looked professionally made! But I was busy setting up a meeting and forgot to photograph them.) 

(Seriously, don't use "cake spackle" without whipping it first. Fluffs up and gets a nice texture. It piped beautifully using the matching cupcake decorating kit and didn't melt or deflate even on the leftovers.)

I've seen three different types of cupcake corer, and although the primary reason I got this one was that I could get it at Michael's instead of ordering it on Amazon, I think this one is probably the best. There's one that is a longer tube with a metal loop handle--but that will make it more difficult to tell how deeply you are coring the cupcake. It looks less comfortable than the blue plastic handle on this one. There's one that has a plunger to eject the core--but that makes it more complicated and harder to clean. Just use a chopstick or something. (And save the cores for a little parfait or snack.)

Something I hadn't anticipated was that the tops of the cupcakes were a bit sticky and this sticky layer stuck to the corer. I had to keep cleaning it with a wet paper towel, which would happen with any of the three styles. (This one was probably the easiest to clean.) Next time, I may sprinkle some icing sugar or cornstarch on the top of the cupcakes to see if that prevents the stickiness.

Love this.  Have been looking for a good cupcake corer and it's PERECT!
