PROJECT NOTES:

For this project, you will use two Zippy™ looms connected together, to make a scarf that is about 7" wide. If you prefer a narrower scarf (around 3.5"), use just one Zippy™ loom. Or, connect a third loom to make your scarf wider.
To make this scarf, we used one skein of Bernat® Blanket™ yarn (10.5 oz.). However, we used both ends of the yarn at one time, so that we were holding two strands of the yarn, the end outside of the skein and the end inside the skein, together.

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS: If you use the entire skein of Bernat® Blanket™ yarn with two Zippy™ looms, your finished scarf should measure about 7" x 102".

To connect the looms, use one of the flat rectangular connectors included in the loom's packaging. Slide the "T" end on one side of the connector into the matching slot at the end of one loom. Do the same for the other side of the connector and the second loom.

Step 2:

Find both ends of the yarn skein. One should be on the inside of the skein and one on the outside. To find the inside end, insert your fingers into the holes on either side of the skein and push them into the very center, so that both hands meet inside the skein. Feel around with your fingers. You are not looking for a single piece of yarn, but a whole clump of yarn that moves around together. Pull that clump out and then search inside it for the yarn end. Now, hold both ends together as if they were one piece of yarn. This is how you will knit on the loom.

Step 3:

To begin your scarf, start with a slipknot. Hold both yarn strands together in your hand as you work. Make a loop in the yarn, leaving a tail that is at least 8" long. Pull the tail up through the loop. Hold the tail and the working yarn together in one hand as you pull with the other. Then pull on the tail to adjust the size of the loop.

Step 4:

To cast your stitches onto the loom, hold the loom so that the side with vertical grooves is facing you. Slip the loop over the first (rightmost) peg of the loom. This will be your first loop. Wrap around the remaining three pegs, moving the yarn from the back around the peg to the front, and then to the back again.

Step 5:

Once you have created your first set of loops, you can begin knitting. The stitch you'll use is called the ewrap. Push your first set of loops down to the base of the pegs. Now make a second set of loops on the pegs. Wrap the yarn around the outside of the final peg and toward the front again. Wrap it behind the next peg, around its far side to the front and then on again to the next peg. Continue wrapping the rest of the pegs in this manner until you reach the end.

Step 6:

Pick up your hook (included with the Zippy™ loom). Beginning on the side of your loom with the working yarn, use the hook to grasp the bottom loop on each peg, pull it up and over the top loop, and then off the peg entirely. When you have done this for each peg on the loom, you have finished your first row of knitting. You should now have only one loop on each peg. Continue to knit by repeating Steps 5 and 6 until your scarf is the desired length.

Step 7:

Once your scarf is long enough, you are ready to bind off its stitches and remove it from the loom. At the beginning of a new row, knit two pegs at once by pulling each bottom loop over the working yarn. Lift the loop from the second peg and hook it onto the first peg. There are now two loops on the first peg. Hook the bottom loop up over the top loop and off the peg entirely. Now hook the remaining loop off of the first peg and move it onto the second peg (currently empty).

Step 8:

You will continue this pattern until the final peg of your loom. Again: Place your working yarn in front of the next peg to the left. Hook the bottom loop up over the working yarn and off the peg completely. Lift up the remaining loop from this peg and hook it onto the previous peg. There are now two loops on this peg. Hook the bottom loop up over the top loop and off the peg entirely. Now hook the remaining loop off of this peg and move it onto the peg to its left (currently empty).

Step 9:

Continue with these steps until the final peg. When you reach this peg, place your working yarn in front of it, then hook the bottom loop up over the working yarn and off the peg completely. Lift up the remaining loop on the final peg and hook it onto the previous peg. There are now two loops on this peg. Hook the bottom loop up over the top loop and off the peg completely. When you have only one loop left on the next to last peg, cut your working yarn, leaving a 4"-6" tail. Remove the final loop from its peg and thread the tail through it, then pull tight. This will knot off your finished scarf.

Step 10:

Weave the yarn tail through the scarf to hide it, then trim the end. Repeat for the tail at the beginning of the scarf, too.
