FINISHED MEASUREMENTS: This pattern fits a round ottoman that is 13½" in diameter and 14¾" high. For a different size of ottoman, you will have to adjust the pattern.

GAUGE: 4sc = 4½"; save time and check your gauge.

This scarf is made using three strands of yarn held together and worked as one strand. You will need a total of 6 or 7 skeins to complete this project. The seventh skein should be split into three equal parts and added on as necessary.

SPECIAL STITCH:

Magic Circle: When beginning a project that is crocheted in the round, a magic circle will allow you to pull the center opening closed completely, so that there's no gap in the center of your piece.

To make a magic circle, hold your non-dominant (usually left) hand in front of you, palm facing you and thumb pointing upward.
Drape the three ends of your yarn over your fingers so that they are hanging a bit below your hand, and the lengths of working yarn fall behind your hand.
Wrap the yarn once, loosely, around your fingers to make a loop. As you do so, make sure the working yarn crosses over the tail to the left, then falls behind your hand again.
Insert your crochet hook through the loop from right to left, and pull up a loop of the working yarn.
Ch one st. (You can carefully slide the loop from your fingers, making sure not to shift any parts of the loop, before doing this.)
Follow the first step below to make stitches into the loop, then sl st to finish this round. Now you can pull on the tails to close the center hole. Continue with the pattern as described below.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Start with a magic circle. Ch 1 (in addition to the ch 1 described above), then 6 sc directly into the magic circle. Sl st to 2nd ch st to finish this round.

Rnd 1: Ch 2, then sc into the same st. Sc twice into each st in the rnd. When you reach the end of the rnd, do not join. Instead, you will continue to work in a continuous spiral for the next seven rounds.

TIP: Use a piece of contrasting yarn or a safety pin to mark the beginning of each round, so you will know when to change sts as you begin a new rnd.

Rnd 2: *(Sc in the first st, sc twice in the following st.) Rep from * until the end of the rnd.

Rnd 3: *(Sc in the first two sts, sc twice in the next st.) Rep from * until the end of the rnd.

Rnd 4: *(Sc in the first three sts, sc twice in the next st.) Rep from * until the end of the rnd.

Rnds 5-8: Sc into each st in the rnd, continuing to work in a spiral without joining rnds. When you reach the end of this rnd, sl st into the final 3 sts.

Step 2:

Rnd 9: Now you'll begin working on the sides of the ottoman. Leave your crochet hook in its current st, and flip the crocheted circle over so that the wrong side is facing you. In this rnd, when you insert your hook into a st, you will insert it through the front loop only (this is the arm of the st that is closest to you). Ch 1, then sc into each st in the rnd, working in the front loop only. When you reach the end of the rnd, do not join. Instead, continue to sc once into each st, so that you are working in a continuous spiral.

TIP: Again, mark the beginning of each rnd with a contrasting piece of yarn or a safety pin to help keep track of your progress.

Rnds 10-25: Sc into each st (working in both loops), working in a continuous spiral instead of joining rnds. As you add rows, test the cover by placing it on the ottoman, so that you can make any necessary adjustments as you work. At the end of the final rnd, sl st to close.

Finishing: Knot off your yarn and trim the excess, leaving a tail of 4"-6". Weave in this tail, as well as the one at the beginning.
