Cut seven 27" [68.6 cm] pieces of macramé cord and one 36" [91.4 cm] piece. Set the small amount of cord aside you have left as you will need it to finish your macramé.

Fold your longer cord in half and turn the fold over so your cord twists one time. Pull end to opposite sides of the fold so your cord is horizontal in front of you with a circle in the middle.

Without disturbing your circle, bring the ends around to the top until they are parallel to each other above your circle making a magic circle.
TIP: Most of your magic circle is now made with two cords.

Now, tie the seven remaining cords around the circle with a lark’s head knot. Keep the two cords parallel.
TIP: To make a lark’s head knot, fold a 27" [68.6 cm] cord in half. Slide the fold underneath the two cords of your magic circle. Grab the ends of the folded 27" [68.6 cm] cord, bring them up and over the magic circle, then through the fold of your 27" [68.6 cm] cord. Pull and tighten the knot.

Slide your magic circle over the top of your ornament.
TIP: Set your ornament inside a small cup or in the cavity of a cupcake pan to hold it still while you work.

Gently pull each end from your magic circle to tighten so it fits snug around the top of your ornament. Be sure to pull evenly so the ends remain the same length.
TIP: The ends of your magic circle in now the eighth set of cords hanging down from the top of your ornament.

Tie the ends of your magic circle in a knot against the top of your ornament.

Arrange the lark’s head knots into four groups of two evenly around the top of your ornament.

Working with one group of two lark’s head knots, separate the four cords hanging down from the knots so you have one cord on the left (A), two cords in the middle and one cord on the right (B). At about halfway down your ornament, make a square knot.
TIP: To make a square knot:
- Cross the (A) cord over the middle cords to make the shape of a “4”.
- Now, move the (B) strand over the (A) strand, under middle cords and through the opening of the “4” on the left.
- Grab a hold of both A and B then pull so the knot tightens in the middle of the ornament. Hold onto the middle cords as you work the knot so they are straight and even.
- For the second half of the square knot, cross the (B) strand over the middle cords to make the shape of a backward “4”.
- Now, move the (A) strand over the (B) strand, under the middle cords and through the opening of the “4” on the right.
- Grab a hold of both A and B then pull so the knot tightens in the middle of your ornament.

Repeat Step 9 for the remaining three groups so you have four square knots, evenly distributed, around the middle of your ornament.

Now, shift your groups over one set of two cords so the two cords to the right of one square knot is now grouped with the two left cords from the adjacent square knot; then repeat Steps 9-10 around the bottom of your ornament.

Gather the cords together below the ornament. Wrap the remaining cord, set aside in Step 1, around the cords two times then tie a knot to make a tassel.

Unravel the cords, brush with a comb and trim the ends of the tassel so they are even.
TIP: Spray your tassel with a little water to help take the ends. Let dry.
