school colors mesh wreath
Show off your family’s school spirit with this colorful mesh wreath! Just pick your team’s colors from our selection of mesh ribbons (we’ve got lots to choose from!) and we’ll show you how easy it is to make your mesh wreath. There’s even a spot for your little star’s name or jersey number!
Step 1 |
First, count out 15 chenille pipe cleaners and cut each one in half. |
Step 2 |
Let’s get your mesh ready! Unroll your mesh ribbons a little bit, and layer the two colors together, matching up their ends. To make your wreath, you will hold the two layers together as if they were one. |
Step 3 |
Gather both ends of the mesh and use one half of a chenille pipe cleaner to wire them onto the wire wreath frame. Just pick a spot to start. |
Step 4 |
Move your hand about 10" down the mesh ribbons, and gather them. Use another chenille pipe cleaner half to wire them onto the wreath, about 4" away from your first gather. TIP: This is the basic technique you’ll use to attach the mesh to your wreath frame, so that it’s nice and full. You can adjust the measurements we’ve given above, but always make sure you’re gathering a length of mesh that’s longer than the distance between attachment points on the wreath frame. |
Step 5 |
Repeat the Step 4 by continuing to gather and attach the mesh ribbons to the wreath frame. After you’ve gone around the frame once, keep going until you feel like the wreath is completely covered and the mesh looks full and even. Fluff and adjust the mesh to make sure you can see both colors, then set the wreath aside until Step 9. TIP: Don’t cut the mesh ribbons from their spools! You’ll use the excess to hang the wood sign at the center of the wreath. (We’ll show you how in Step 9.) |
Step 6 |
Now, turn the wood plaque around and paint its back a solid white. Let the paint dry. |
Step 7 |
Use stickers to spell out your star’s name and add their jersey number to the painted side of the plaque. |
Step 8 |
Next, use a dab of hot glue to fasten the foam sports ball shape to the wood plaque. |
Step 9 |
Now it’s time to attach the sign to your wreath! Arrange the excess mesh ribbon so that it hangs down at the center of the wreath. Lay the wood sign over the mesh and use hot glue to fasten it in place, so that it now hangs in the middle of the wreath. Cut off any remaining mesh and discard. |
Step 10 |
Finally, make a hanger for your wreath. Just twist a chenille pipe cleaner onto the wire form to create a loop. Share your project photos with #MakeItWithMichaels |
