I am a watercolor, digital, and graphite artist. I decided to try soft pastels as a new medium. This box of chalk pastels is very reasonably priced and affordable. The pastel sticks are not brittle. I had zero breaking. They are very easy to hold. I like that the square shape allows me to get dynamic use of the chalk stick by being able to create fine strokes with the corner tips and edges, while also being able to lay down a reasonably larger amount of pigment by using any of the product sides. This box has a good selection of colors for chalk work. You can layer the colors and blend them. The chalks blend easily with finger tips, q-tips, blending stumps, tissues, and other blending tools. I PERSONALLY didnt like the effect I got when doing wet blending, but you can add water or solvents to blend.
Things to point out on the other end of the spectrum include the fact that these are sidewalk chalk grade pastels. If you want professional results, get a professional grade pastel kit. Also, the term "soft pastel" doesnt mean the chalk is soft. There are many "soft pastels" that are hard. They vary in density based on the ratio of pigment to binding agent. These "soft pastels" are not soft. They are pretty dense. Not as hard as some others, but harder than professional grade soft pastels. This contributes to the fact that they arent as brittle and dont break as easily. But, it also affects how the pigment is laid down onto the paper, so keep that in mind when purchasing.
This is a good cheap set if you want to experiment, or you can work with the properties of these pastels. Sometimes an artist might want a pastel with these properties.
If you want the control of a pencil, and/or you want to create fine detail with pastels...dont get soft pastel CHALK sticks/squares. Get yourself some Chalk/Pastel pencils instead.

Great for the street chalk artist
I call myself a 'Chalker', or sidewalk chalk artist. These pastels are a great addition to my kit of brand and bargain sidewalk chalks. The colors are highly pigmented and can really enhance your street art on a budget, these pastels have some staying g power on pavement if rain doesn't come to heavily. The addition of extra black and white, and the deep indigo purple (which I sometimes sub for black) would make the kit more useful. The sticks are hard, I can't see how they would be all that great for drawing detailed art on paper. They are also smallish which is whyI use them sparingly to enhancethe regular chalks. I bought 2 kits and will no doubt buy more. I'd love an expanded set of 45 sticks with the additions i mentioned and a few more
green hues and whatever else you could
add . Or if I could buy just the reds or blues or dark palettes on their own for a few
dollars each.
