marbled fondant tiered cake

Transform your next cake into a true showstopper – cover it with a layer of lovely, marbled fondant! We’ve partnered with Bluprint™ to teach you how to make your own delicious version of this modern, sophisticated trend. Just check out the video and instructions and get started!
Step 1

First, you’ll need a (round) cake! Bake your favorite cake, let it cool, then ice it with a crumb coat and set it aside.

TIP: A crumb coat is just a thin layer of buttercream icing.

Step 2

Next, sprinkle the powdered sugar (or cornstarch) onto a smooth, clean surface.

TIP: If you're in a humid environment, we recommend you sprinkle cornstarch instead of powdered sugar to keep your fondant from sticking to your working surface.

Step 3
Separate your fondant into four or five equal parts.
Step 4

Now, knead varying amounts of color into each section of fondant, so that you have four or five different colors to create your marbled fondant.

TIP: Keep in mind that combining dark and light colors will give the cake a very dramatic marbled effect.

Step 5
Once you’re satisfied with the selection of colors you’ve created, roll each color of fondant into a thin log. Alternate the thickness of each log. This variation will help your marbling look more natural.
Step 6

Next, sandwich all the logs together, alternating colors, then roll them against your working surface to make one giant log. Now, you’ll twist the log to blend the colors further. To do this, grasp the log by its ends and turn them in opposite directions until the colors are twisted throughout.

TIP: You may find you need to repeat this step two or three times to mix the colors to your satisfaction. As you work, keep an eye on how much the colors have blended and take care not to over-mix them.

Step 7
You’re ready to roll out your fondant! Coil the log you’ve made and use your rolling pin to roll it out to ⅛" thick.
Step 8
Next, you’ll measure your round cake to figure out how much fondant you’ll need to cover it. To do this, add the height of your cake to its width across the top, then add the height once more. (That’s 2H + W, if you’re a math fan!) Your rolled-out fondant should measure at least as far across as the sum of your measurements.
Step 9

Once you’re sure your sheet of fondant is wide enough to cover your cake, gently scoop it up with your hands, then drape it across the top of your cake.

TIP: If you live in a dry climate, you may find the fondant sticks better when you spray your cake with a little water first.

Step 10
Now, take your fondant smoother and gently apply pressure across the top of your cake to smooth out any wrinkles, bubbles or creases.
Step 11
Use the sides of your hands to gently smooth the fondant down around the sides of the cake, too.
Step 12

Once your fondant has been smoothed, take your spatula and run it along the bottom edge of the cake to trim away any excess fondant.

Step 13
Now it’s time to add a few details that’ll make your marbled cake really shine! Use a food-safe paintbrush to accent the marbled bands with Silver cake paint. Follow the natural lines of color to add as much or little as you like. When you’re happy with the way your cake looks, let the paint set.
