Description

This leather dye works as easily and effectively as a traditional penetrating leather dye, but it is better for the environment. You can feel good about using it, because LeatherColors emits less Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) into the air. It's great for coloring vegetable tanned leather items. Use it on belts, wallets, wristbands and other leather projects.

Details:
  • Available in multiple colors
  • 2.2 fl. oz. (65ml)
  • Low VOC dye

Fiebing's LeatherColors™ is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 18.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Does the job, but the color is odd. I got this due knowing that the color wasn't going to be a nice flat black thanks to another review, but seeing it in person really made me realize they weren't exaggerating. I had thrifted a pair of maroon leather shoes that I wanted to dye black, so I prepped the leather by deglazing it with pure acetone and went to work. It took about 3 coats, drying for a bit in between, to seemingly get full opacity. You have to be careful with application too since it is a water-soluble dye, it lifts itself if you don't apply it carefully. The color, when at full opacity and dry, looks like the ink of a black ballpoint pen. It has a bronze sheen to it and was definitely noticeable. With this not being the finish I was going for, I ended up applying a layer of Kiwi Leather Dye (kiwi is more like a paint dye, ie. leaves a shiny almost patent leather finish, but is a pain to do in more than one coat). Alone, this dye is meh. As a base in the way I used it, it works pretty good. I wouldn't buy this again though based on the color alone.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from You Must Use Deglazer Or Leather Prep FIRST I am writing this review to save some people who are going to buy this without researching leather dyes. First, you MUST prep the item you are dying. You must use the Deglazer or Fiebings Dye Prep FIRST or the color will come off later. Second, this black is NOT a true flat black. It has an undertone. This means that your item is going to have a bronze undertone that looks slightly iridescent. It won't be as problematic if you are covering something that is another color, but if you are just doing touchups to an item that is already black, the blacks are likely NOT going to match. Also, after you dye the item, you need a sealant. Fiebings makes those. So please know that you can't just purchase this and start using it without prepping your item. You will be disappointed if you do and the dye will come right off. This is a product that SHOULD come with specific instructions letting you know that you cannot just use it straight out of the box! I give this 2 stars because it will work, but it is not a true black and because the instructions are not going to help the average consumer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Pretty great! I bought a fairly large piece of mustard yellow leather simply because it was on sale, even though I'd never use it for the color. I figured if nothing else, I could use it for testing designs. When I figured out what I wanted to do with it, I got it all cut out and put together. I was looking for leather lacing when I found this dye. Figured I'd try it out. Worked a lot better than I thought it would. Went back and bought all they had. Now that ugly leather can be used for final products.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from The black has a green undertone Worked OK to touch-up some worn areas on the bottom of my pebbled leather handbag. However, there's an iridescent green sheen to the black. I wouldn't recommend using this for anything other than touch-ups for areas on bags or shoes that aren't very visible. And definitely not to dye an entire area. The item will look dark shimmery green.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Limited Colors Unfortunately, the color was too orange, not tan, and didn't match my project. It would be nice if there were more than 3 color options. On the plus side, I was able to wash it off before it dried with no residual staining.
