Constructed between 1868 and 1870, it was built to warn mariners of the treacherous Diamond Shoals, a series of shifting sandbars extending from the cape that earned the area the nickname “Graveyard of the Atlantic.” The lighthouse’s distinctive black and white spiral design, added in 1873, makes it easily recognizable. In 1999, due to severe shoreline erosion, the entire structure was relocated 2,900 feet inland to protect it from encroaching seas.
