Puya alpestris, Sapphire Tower, giant bromeliad, 15 rare seeds, vibrant turquoise blooms, electric blue, drought tolerant, desert garden
This giant bromeliad is amazing. Its intense blue color is difficult to believe - luminous, metallic turquoise, a color you might paint a race car. Plus it has bright orange stamens. The large clumping rosettes of spiky foliage are handsome year round in a desert garden. Then comes a 5' tall flower spike that explodes with metallic blue blossoms. Hummingbirds love them and the branches provide convenient perches. Native to Southern Chile, Puya alpestris thrives in zones 9-11, is utterly drought tolerant, hardy to 20-25° F. Surface sow the tiny seeds on the top of a sandy medium and keep warm. Germination can be erratic, but these tiny seeds come through. If you are intimidated by TINY seeds, this may not be the plant for you. 15 seeds
