The first step is creating the stencil (stencils can only be used one time) Second application of the stencil to the shell and then removing sections to make the image stand out otherwise it would be just a silhouetted mass of the top layer. The third is the etching and the Final step is removing the stencil to reveal the image. The engraved shells are etched by hand. They are full-size adult tiger cowries ranging from 2 to 3 1/2 inches. These custom-engraved shells are one of a kind. No two shells are 100% alike! The shells of cowries are usually smooth and shiny and more or less egg-shaped, with a flat under the surface which shows a long, narrow, slit-like opening (aperture), which is often toothed at the edges. Many people throughout history have found (and still find) the very rounded, shiny, porcelain-like shells of cowries pleasing.
