Uncle Sam is a common nickname for the US government. It was first used during the war of 1812 and was named after Samuel Wilson. He was a meat packer who supplied meat rations yo the soldiers. The barrels were marked U.S. for United States, but the soldiers began referring to the shipments as being from "Uncle Sam".
