Our insert is laser cut from MDF (medium-density fibreboard). The interlocking pieces are then glued together with wood glue. The unit is shipped in two pieces (the bottom tier and top tier). To assemble, place the top tier on the bottom tier and align the notches to lock in place. The bottom tier can be used as a standalone shelf. The assembled measurements are: 13-1/8" wide, 8" tall and 9 2/8" deep. The bottom tier is 4" tall with a 4 3/4" display depth. The top tier is 4" tall and has a 4 1/2" display depth. If you use the bottom tier as a standalone unit it will have a display depth of 9 2/8". We recommend having a back on your cube shelf. Unfinished: MDF (medium-density fibreboard) which is 1/4" thick and a brownish color. Very strong.
